The tracks are akin to episode highlights and aren't really sequenced to do more than acknowledge what's made the composer popular. That's not the case with this collection. Although it only features two previously unreleased cues ("Theme from Bitter Moon" and "Theme from The Plague"), the whole album has been segued together to make one long unique listening experience. Opening to the lapping of waves (a watery motif that continues), "Bon Voyage" from Oceanic ismore… a perfectly subtle place to start. The tracks are then sequenced according to an organic flow from the end of one to the beginning of the next, as demonstrated by the spacing of four cues from 1492 across the album. The soundtrack by Greek synth-score pioneer Vangelis Papathanassiou may be bookended by heroic orchestral/choral pomp of suitable scale and melodic dignity, but they buttress a far more compelling cocktail of primitive martial rhythms ("Drums of Gaugamela") and ancient ethnic-folk conceits ("Roxanne's Dance"). Though hismore… film scores have become increasingly rare since the twin breakthroughs of his Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire and the sci-fi masterpiece Bladerunner, his work here argues that Vangelis' restless curiosity and musical range have only blossomed in the ensuing decades. With the exception of the final, club-targeted bonus cut, gone are his once overt electronics, replaced by a more organic, post-modern sense of fusion that evinces itself seductively on cues like "One Morning at Pella" and "Eastern Path." Strange if, like me, you're used to guitar-led music. Beautiful because it just is. It is somehow as empty as if it was the soundtrack to the Universe, but filled with little points of light. Tracks on this album which deserve a special mention: there's the hauntingly beautiful 12 o'Clock, the throbbing Pulstar, and, of course, So Long Ago, So Clear with the vocals of Yes man Jon. Albedo 0.39 with the chant-like vocals reminds me of a subliminal learning tape. Unfortunately, this CD does not include Metallic Rain, but it is still far superior to mostmore… chill-out CDs on the market. Have a night in, light a candle, and relax...This isn't just ambient noise.
