DescriptionJon Anderson's first project following his departure from Yes was to reunite with the equally airy Vangelis for a collaborative effort as Jon and Vangelis. Short Stories actually marks their second collaboration — the first took place on Vangelis' 1975 album, Heaven and Hell, with the track "So Long Ago, So Clear." The pair returns to that song's successful formula of combining Anderson's otherworldly voice with Vangelis' pithy melodies in a few spots on their debut together, notably for the popular single "I Hear You Now" (which recalls Vangelis' "To the Unknown Man") and the middle sectionmore… of "Far Away in Bagaad." Otherwise, Short Stories favors amorphous arrangements that feature wisps of melody and little more (a style that has its precedent on Yes' Tormato rather than their own solo work to date). The effect can be, frankly, underwhelming — "Curious Electric" and "Each and Everyday," for example, seem content to settle for the happy accidents of collaboration rather than fusing their individual sounds into a cohesive whole. Despite a handful of nearly memorable moments, including the playful "Thunder" and the charming "Love Is/One More Time," the pair would have had more success sticking to their established idioms — after all, China and Olias of Sunhillow were good albums — rather than trying to meet in some equidistant, ethereal plane. Given the record's paper-thin arrangements, an appreciation for the music of Vangelis and Jon Anderson is no guarantee that Short Stories will please. DescriptionAfter a commercially successful time in the USA, Demis Roussos returned to London in 1981. Just over the height of his career Demis had decided to lose weight, which shows on all his photo's from the era. Together with Veronique Skawinska, Vangelis' girlfriend at the time, Demis even wrote the book 'A question of weight' about his slimming experiences. Read it if you can find it, apart from Veronique's slimming recipes it contains very interesting stories by Demis about his time during Aphrodite's Child, including several anecdotes involving Vangelis! CreditsCuriously, on both the CD and LP Vangelis is only mentioned for composing 'Race to the end'. Apart from Demis getting the credits for producing the album, further credits are scarce on this album. Fortunately more information on the special edition box set 'The Phenomenon' (BR Music box 1008-2 ), which contains both 'Race to the end' and 'Lament'. Both songs were actually produced by Vangelis, and recorded in Nemo Studios in 1981 and 1982. Jon Anderson is credited for composing 'Lament', writing lyrics for both songs, as well as another song on the album 'Song for the free'. Unfortunately there is no other information about this third song, which makes it unclear if Vangelis was somehow involved in it.... DescriptionSuzanne Ciani's landmark 1984 release Velocity of Love established the noted electronic composer in the U.S. and became one of instrumental/new age radio's early success stories. Together with Vangelis, who contributed keyboards to "Lay Down Beside Me," "Malibuzios," and "History of My Heart," Ciani created a formless, diaphanous record that nevertheless seemed guided by real emotion. There were the subtle pop melodies that flitted about beneath the synthesized surface, certainly. But it was difficult not to hear the album's influential title track and miss the wave of wistful sadness that curledmore… around its brittle melody. It was a deceptively simple piano line that suggested the theme music of some unknown 1970s character drama, the kind where autumn leaves constantly blow through open curtains for effect. At the same time, the song's pulsating bank of synthesizers united its classic qualities with the futuristic tendencies and two-dimensional rayon sheen of the 1980s. While some of its later compositions were a bit overwrought, teetering under the weight of their own keyboard wizardry, Velocity of Love is still essential for any fan of Ciani or the formative days of contemporary instrumental music. DescriptionLovers of the Chariot's of Fire style Vangelis may find this intriguing album something of a mystery. It's five musical pieces that would seem more at home on a Brian Eno album. On first listening nothing seems to happen, but repeated listenings reward the listener with hidden depths and textures in the five hypnotic pieces. Whilst it lacks the fragile beauty and melancholy of Blade Runner or Opera Sauvage which is why I only give it four stars but it's still an essential purchase for anyone who like the works of Eno, Phillip Glass et al. He shreds his symphonic biases to create a totally electronic album with lots of quirky experimental sounds and sci-fi timbres. The atmospheres are quite stark and playful. Vangelis seems to have been trying to reach a broader audience. This is pure space music with icy tones and metallic textures. It borders on sheer minimalism and is an extreme departure for him. This rare gem will appeal to fans of Michael Stearns, Constance Demby, and Maitreya. DescriptionMask is an e-music symphony in six movements. Vangelis is near his best on this album. He takes the best from his many different e-music personas and creates huge walls of dramatic and hypnotic sound. Vangelis combines symphonic synths, atmospheres, Berlin school sequences, choral chants, and sweet melodies in this soundscape. The mood shifts from bombastic to triumphant to mysterious to challenging and back and forth and in and out. The atmospheres weave through and around the soundscape, never losing the drama. Deep listeners will be on the edges of their seats. This great CD is like a soundtrackmore… with no film.
