She made fame with acting in movies as "The guns of Navarone" (1961), Michael Cacoyannis' "Zorba the Greek" (1964) and Costa-Gavras "Z" (1969). One of her last parts as an actor she played a role in the movie "Captain's Corelli Mandolin" (2001). Also, together with her husband director Michael Cacoyannis she created many films based on the original plays of Euripides, namely "Electra" (1960), "Trojan Women" (1971) and "Iphigenia" (1976). Apart from movies Irene has directed many Greek plays staged in theatres, more recently "Las Troyanas" (2001) in Sagunto (Spain), "Ecuba" (2003) in Rome (Italy) and "Antigone" (2005) in Syracuse (Sicily, Italy). She is currently president of three acting schools, the "City of the Scenic Arts" of Sagunto, the "Tor Vergata" of Rome and the "To Skolion" of Athens. ----- On ‘Odes’ Vangelis teams up again with an old friend who'd worked with him before on the Aphrodite's Child album '666'. All songs Greek actress Irene Papas sings on this album are Greek traditionals to which Vangelis adds two instrumental tracks. ‘Odes’ is one of the very few projects Vangelis has been involved in that also has any sort of literary component. Greek author turned politician Arianna Stassinopoulos, who wrote books on Maria Callas and Pablo Picasso, contributes some poems and texts along with Irene Papas, which are printed in the booklet. The latter wrote a few rather dramatic introductory lines, in which she relates how the songs were always with her from childhood, how they reflect the emotions and common destiny of the people in the communities in which they survive across time and place. This folk music is rather austere but quite evocative and uses mostly those typically Mediterranean modal harmonies. Vangelis on the whole makes sparing use of his instruments with Irene Papas sometimes even singing on her own or accompanied by a single melody-line. She hasn't got a great voice, a bit like that of Marianne Faithfull, but it’s quite effective and suits this music. And of course she speaks Greek so is able to really ”act out” the songs. The heroic opening track is about an army of youthful freedom fighters on their way to war. It has a few equally dramatic outbursts by Vangelis plus a few exchanges between a little choir representing the youths and Irene Papas representing an old man they meet along the way, set to marching music. The slow lyrical piece that follows is about the fading colors of a tired old orange tree, presumably symbolizing the tragic plight of Greece during occupation. ‘La Danse du Feu’ is the first of the Vangelis composed instrumental pieces. After a fast intro it settles down to a more lyrical mode where Vangelis again uses that deeply expressive vaguely Arab bass-sound also employed on his album 'Earth', to great effect. ‘Kolokotronei’ refers to a famous family in Greece’s history and is again a slow lyrical song, this time sung a cappella by Irene Papas, with Vangelis making it sound like she sings it in a church, using lots of echo. ‘Le Fleuve’ has a more persistent rhythm to go with the poem about the river of life and some beautiful flowing instrumental passages. ‘Racines’ (meaning ‘roots’) is the second instrumental composed by Vangelis and longest track on the album. It consists of a sequence of slightly bluesy keyboard-solos using alternatively a flute-like sound and the same bass-sound as in the first instrumental, set against a slow sequencer-pattern. The two ladies wrote a few accompanying lines about Vangelis remembering all sorts of impressions which go into his music, a bit like his own text in the booklet for Mythodea. The title of the penultimate track ‘Lamento’ speaks for itself, a tragic atmosphere is set up by low string sounds and long suffering notes, again with flute and bass keyboard-solos by Vangelis. In contrast, the last track is more upbeat although the song apparently relates a tale of Menousis defending his honor against other men by killing his wife. Vangelis plays along with the tune and adds some simple percussion, and the little choir also makes a brief return. Vangelis has stated he made this album to ”resurrect” these songs which were in danger of becoming dusty old museum pieces and that consequently it became quite a popular work in Greece, this at a time when he was still working far away in England. Maybe those more traditionally inclined would have felt this to be tampering with the original material, and one could say that the high-pitched sort of cosmic noises introduced in some tracks are a touch superfluous. Nevertheless, this must count as a tasteful and sincere work by three Greeks keeping the flame of their ancient culture burning. Description: China is a 1979 album by the Greek artist Vangelis. Although he had never been to China, he employed Chinese instruments and compositional styles on this concept album. Concepts used range from classical Chinese poetry ("The Little Fete" is a poem by the 8th century Li Po, translated by J.C. Cooper) to revolutionary history of the People's Republic of China ("The Long March"). ----- China was one of the albums I played to death during my seminal 'Rites of Passage' years between the ages of 16 and 19. It is a superb blend of techno keys and traditional chinese music with some stirring atmospheric tracks. Himalya and Summit capture what must be an awesome feeling of standing above the cloud base atop a snow peaked mountain. Forget Chariots of Fire and all the populist tracks that he produced in the late 80's and early 90's ... this is the real Vangelis at his best. The music on this album was created largely on the Yamaha CS-80, the ring modulator of which he uses extensively. The sleeve design of the album is by Vangelis himself. The recording engineer was Keith Spencer-Allen, who was assisted by Marlis Duncklau. ----- Those listeners hoping for more of the anthemic strains of "Chariots Of Fire"--or even of his collaborations with Jon Anderson--will be disappointed here. Released relatively early in his career (1975), Beaubourg sees Vangelis at his most insular and experimental. Where most of his peers (Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Patrick Moraz) were content simply to use their synthesisers much as they would an electric organ, or as a handy substitute for other acoustic instruments (horns, strings, etc.), Vangelis was attempting--under the influence, admittedly, of various European antecedents--to devise amore… musical language appropriate to the qualities of that particular instrument. Divided into two parts, the album now serves as a kind of primer to the mid-1970s analogue synth, in all its wheezy glory. Description: Greek composer Vangelis is best known for the stunning film scores which adorn 'Blade Runner' and 'Chariots of Fire', for which he won Best Music Oscar. However, much of his best soundtrack work was done years earlier for obscure European Arthouse films and documentaries. IGNACIO is one of the these, and was previously available under the title 'Can You Hear the Dogs Barking?' This album presents the film score in the shape of two long, flowing pieces. They are dominated by Vangelis' superlative performance on grand piano, although his expertise at simulating an entire orchestra via electronicmore… instruments is also perfectly in evidence. Electronic music was still in its relative infancy at the time this score was written and recorded, but Vangelis' early 'pseudo-orchestra' remains particularly expressive. Moreover, the composer was at the height of his creativity, and the music itself is overwhelmingly beautiful. This is enough to overcome the basic nature of the recording. Moreover, there is a particularly emotional and evocative nature to this score which is somewhat lacking in the composer's later work, as it slowly became far more manufactured and self-consciously majestic. Part Two may lack the intensity and depth of Part One, and the production is even leaner, but if you enjoy the romantic grandeur that typified the work of the early Vangelis, then IGNACIO is about as good as it gets! Vangelis plays synthesizer, sequencers, electric piano, drums and percussion. It is the first album on which Vangelis used the Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer, on which he relied heavily in subsequent work. Style Spiral is a futuristic album, and Vangelis makes extensive use of the synthesizer technology of the day; this album is probably the most sequencer-based of his recording career. Each piece has a unique style, and deserves individual treatment. "Spiral" builds on an arpeggio chord that is panned in stereo to give the listener a spiralling sensation; the piece continues along a sequenced synthesizer pulse and develops into a slightly black, somewhat bluesy piece that builds on Vangelis' patent brass. "Ballad" is a calm piece, building on electric organ, harmonica (probably a synthesizer patch) and Vangelis' voice run through filters and a reverb. It climaxes on brass and timpani, then losing steam and returning to harmonica calm. "Dervish D" is, according to the sleeve notes, "inspired by the Dervish dancer who by his whirling realises the spiralling of the universe". Musically, there is little that reminds one of Turkish music: a sequencer arpeggio base, percussion and synthesizer melody. The use of blue notes gives the piece a blues feel. "To the Unknown Man" is a piece in three parts. It starts off minimalist with a slow pulse sequence and a simple guitar-like melody. Strings come in, and the piece progresses to the march-like second part. In the third part, the melody disappears, and is replaced with a rock beat and organ chords. "3+3" is, true to its name, built entirely in threes. It consists of three parts, and although the measure changes several times, all parts are either 3/4 or 6/8 (although some appears to be 9/8). An elaborate 12/8 pulse sequence runs along the whole piece. The brass chords in the course of the piece resemble a true big band, no small feat with 1970s synthesizers. Of the album's tracks, this piece arguably has the most blues overtones. Albedo 0.39 was the second album produced by Vangelis in Nemo Studios, London, which was his creative base until the late 1980s. It contrasts with his previous album, Heaven and Hell, which was classically inspired and choral, while Albedo 0.39 has blues and jazz overtones. Nevertheless, both albums share a classic, 1970's aura of intense electronic majesty. Vangelis plays all instruments. Although it is uncertain which synthesizers Vangelis employs on this album, other instruments include acoustic drums, bass, percussion, a xylophone, a gamelan (track 2) and recordings of the speaking clock (courtesy of Post Office communications) and the Apollo moon landing ("courtesy of NASA"). It appears Vangelis alternates synthesizer and acoustic basses on different tracks. The only vocal is the narrative on the title track, which is uncredited. It was later revealed to be the voice of Vangelis' sound engineer, Keith Spencer-Allen. Overview "Pulstar" (supposedly a contraction of "pulsar" and "star") was to be the most popular track, building on a synthesizer pulse sequence, a trumpet main line and various other synthesizer brass lines. It ends with a recording of the speaking clock. "Freefall" builds on a gamelan sequence, two flutes and a synthesizer line. "Mare tranquilitatis" is a quiet synthesizer piece featuring recordings of several Apollo moon landings. Samples of this track can be heard on Enigma's album, The Cross of Changes (uncredited). "Main sequence" is propelled by a pulsed synthesizer sequence, along which a trumpet- and drums-based jazz track develops. It calms down and flows into— "Sword of Orion", built on an arpeggio chord, trumpet melody, and percussion. On "Alpha", Vangelis employs a composing technique he would use extensively on later albums (e.g. Direct): a simple theme of a few bars is developed through increasingly complex instrumentation. Instruments include a slow synthesizer arpeggio, synthesizer mallet melody line, xylophone, percussion and (later) acoustic drums. It is a rather upbeat piece. The "Nucleogenesis" suite conveys a somewhat darker mood, employing a church organ, an organ synthesizer pulse, various lines of Vangelis' patent synthesizer brass, acoustic drums and basses. Although hard to classify, the pieces appear to hold a ground between classical, blues and hard rock. The title track, "Albedo 0.39" is an atmospheric track building on waxing and waning synthesizer chords and arpeggios, while a voice with a British accent narrates various physical properties of the Earth, such as its mass, length of the year in various measurements, and, finally, its albedo (amount of light reflected back into space). "The Gate", the opening track of another Enigma album, The Screen Behind the Mirror, appears to have been inspired by this Vangelis piece. Excerpts from "Pulstar" and "Alpha" can be heard on episodes of Carl Sagan's documentary series Cosmos, along with several other Vangelis themes. Overview This album is one of Vangelis' very earliest works, recorded whilst still a member of progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child. It also marks the first time that he collaborated with French director Frйdйric Rossif on soundtracks relating to his TV documentary programmes. Though the album itself was released in 1973, the music was recorded in 1970. In oppostion to the way he later recorded soundtrack music - watching the filmed material, then composing to it - in this instance he simply recorded a suite of generic tunes (based on the wildlife theme of the project, but not having access to it) and left it to the film editors to splice-in whatever they needed. The documentary contains much more music than is available on the album, a common theme with Vangelis soundtracks. The music belongs to a period in which Vangelis was very prolific, and willing to experiment with technology and styles. Not only was he still part of a band, and collaborating with a variety of artists, but he had also created a soundtrack to the "adult" movie Sex power and completed two solo albums, Hypothesis and The Dragon. Musically, the album is extremely melodic, with a minimum of rhythm-based compositions. The long, flowing lines of the major pieces are a precursor of ambient, and feature a style that became known as "cosmic", a variant of drone music. Most of the Krautrock artists also dabbled in this musical style.
