The difference is that here they are excellently arranged and together show a broad range of Jons' talent. This will appeal to a wider audience than Jon normally reaches. Many tracks feature full orchestra and really come to life as a result - State of Independence and Hearts are excellent. The Kiss and Chagall duet are very well written and performed. I also thought that the last three tracks are all good - Hurry Home is far better than on the original (on Angels embrace?), Under the Sun and Change We Must go well togethermore… - and that title track is a life-changing anthem if ever there was one! I lost my copy and had to hunt for a replacement - I felt a part of my life was missing! If you can, listen to the samples but you aren't getting the best bits. Play it loud with lots of tone to get the full feel-good benefit! В основном дело в Вангелисе, стиль которого со времен Direct начал сильно меняться. Однако и общий стиль их работы также изменяется. Альбом не имел большого коммерческого успеха. Традиционный вариант этого альбома фактически представляет собой переделанную версию. До нее была выпущена другая, с некоторыми отличиями. Whilst it lacks the fragile beauty and melancholy of Blade Runner or Opera Sauvage which is why I only give it four stars but it's still an essential purchase for anyone who like the works of Eno, Phillip Glass et al. Description Suzanne Ciani's landmark 1984 release Velocity of Love established the noted electronic composer in the U.S. and became one of instrumental/new age radio's early success stories. Together with Vangelis, who contributed keyboards to "Lay Down Beside Me," "Malibuzios," and "History of My Heart," Ciani created a formless, diaphanous record that nevertheless seemed guided by real emotion. There were the subtle pop melodies that flitted about beneath the synthesized surface, certainly. But it was difficult not to hear the album's influential title track and miss the wave of wistful sadness that curledmore… around its brittle melody. It was a deceptively simple piano line that suggested the theme music of some unknown 1970s character drama, the kind where autumn leaves constantly blow through open curtains for effect. At the same time, the song's pulsating bank of synthesizers united its classic qualities with the futuristic tendencies and two-dimensional rayon sheen of the 1980s. While some of its later compositions were a bit overwrought, teetering under the weight of their own keyboard wizardry, Velocity of Love is still essential for any fan of Ciani or the formative days of contemporary instrumental music. Description After a commercially successful time in the USA, Demis Roussos returned to London in 1981. Just over the height of his career Demis had decided to lose weight, which shows on all his photo's from the era. Together with Veronique Skawinska, Vangelis' girlfriend at the time, Demis even wrote the book 'A question of weight' about his slimming experiences. Read it if you can find it, apart from Veronique's slimming recipes it contains very interesting stories by Demis about his time during Aphrodite's Child, including several anecdotes involving Vangelis! Credits Curiously, on both the CD and LP Vangelis is only mentioned for composing 'Race to the end'. Apart from Demis getting the credits for producing the album, further credits are scarce on this album. Fortunately more information on the special edition box set 'The Phenomenon' (BR Music box 1008-2 ), which contains both 'Race to the end' and 'Lament'. Both songs were actually produced by Vangelis, and recorded in Nemo Studios in 1981 and 1982. Jon Anderson is credited for composing 'Lament', writing lyrics for both songs, as well as another song on the album 'Song for the free'. Unfortunately there is no other information about this third song, which makes it unclear if Vangelis was somehow involved in it.... Description Jon Anderson's first project following his departure from Yes was to reunite with the equally airy Vangelis for a collaborative effort as Jon and Vangelis. Short Stories actually marks their second collaboration — the first took place on Vangelis' 1975 album, Heaven and Hell, with the track "So Long Ago, So Clear." The pair returns to that song's successful formula of combining Anderson's otherworldly voice with Vangelis' pithy melodies in a few spots on their debut together, notably for the popular single "I Hear You Now" (which recalls Vangelis' "To the Unknown Man") and the middle sectionmore… of "Far Away in Bagaad." Otherwise, Short Stories favors amorphous arrangements that feature wisps of melody and little more (a style that has its precedent on Yes' Tormato rather than their own solo work to date). The effect can be, frankly, underwhelming — "Curious Electric" and "Each and Everyday," for example, seem content to settle for the happy accidents of collaboration rather than fusing their individual sounds into a cohesive whole. Despite a handful of nearly memorable moments, including the playful "Thunder" and the charming "Love Is/One More Time," the pair would have had more success sticking to their established idioms — after all, China and Olias of Sunhillow were good albums — rather than trying to meet in some equidistant, ethereal plane. Given the record's paper-thin arrangements, an appreciation for the music of Vangelis and Jon Anderson is no guarantee that Short Stories will please. Description Most everyone is familiar with the romantic piano-and-synthesizer washes of the surprise instrumental hit "Titles (Main Theme)" from this 1981 film soundtrack. What is surprising is there's a lot more going on with this score. Greek keyboardist/composer Vangelis had been recording albums for years before this soundtrack catapulted him into fame. He'd even been asked to join the prog rock band Yes at one point. (He was wise to pass on the offer.) Here you can hear the breadth of his talent at creating dreamy moods with synthesizers and classically inspired backdrops. Some of this music, howevermore…, doesn't quite hold its own without the visuals. It just does not feel like, well, the Antarctic. Considering the non-commercial scope of the series any music could be used, free of charge. The variety of the selected music ranged from classical and ethnical music, to Vangelis' and Jean-Michel Jarre's synthesized pieces taken from their seventies albums. The liner notes of "The music of Cosmos" - Collector's Edition explain: "The musical content of COSMOS seemed to create a message of it's own - almost as though it were the collective intelligence of the universe pleasantly calling our attention to the lessons at hand. [this]... expresses, simply and eloquently, our intentions in selecting music for the thirteen hours of the COSMOS television series. As with the golden phonograph record placed on board the Voyager spacecraft, bearing a sampling of "Earth's Greatest Hits", we included a variety of musical traditions and genres. Description Everything you thought you knew about Vangelis and his music is totaly distroyed by this record. Gone are the warm sentiments, and in their place is something gritty and negative. But this must be Vangelis's most personal work and it is one of my favorites. For starters all the lyrics are written by Vangelis himself (a first), none of John Andersons's slushy lyrics but he does appear on vocals on a couple of tracks. This album is to Vangelis what 'The Wall' is to Pink Floyd and he does a good job of getting his own personal feeling's out in the open. Multi-Track Suggestion seems to highlightmore… what Vangelis believes as technology bloting out any sort of humanity the human race has left. Electronic teminology is used in his lyrics along with references of lost love. It seems that even though Vangelis acknowleges the use of technology in his music he belives that it will play a part in our downfall, a sort of 'Teminator' view of the future. I'm suprised this track wasn't a hit single in the U.K. because it would of gone well with the other synthpop tunes that were infiltrating the british charts at the time the album was released (1980) Suffication is inspired by a true-life event of a chemical leek at an Italian factory in the mid-seventies (yes!! I agree, very unlike Vangelis)the music is very upbeat, as are several of the other tracks, probably his most upbeat album since 'Albedo 0.39' and 'Spiral'. Vangelis seems to rely less on his usual selection of Orchestral sounds too with this work and there are some great sound effects and ambient noises added to the mix and is probably his most diverse work of the eighties until the realease of 'Direct'. 'I Can't take it any more' speaks for itself realy and the lyrics are performed through a vocoder that give them a sort of Kraftwerk 'robot' effect. This is a sinister track that would be used to great effect if played in the dark on halloween, spine-tingling. Everyone should know 'Memories of Green' beacause it was in the 'Bladerunner' movie that Vangelis scored. A moving piano piece that seems to tell a story of a lost time, of a lost way of life before modern times came along and spoiled everything. This album has some great musical ideas and effects, and stands as one of my favorits of Vangelis's because it shows a different side to the composer, very different and even though some of the lyrics are as confusing as a Nostradamus Quatrain (and some In foreign) they are totaly from his viewpoint. Subsequent equiry into the strange lyrics has opened my heart to this work even more. It's radicaly musicaly and lyricaly different to anything I've heard before.A gem.
