Эйнштейн Альберт, немецкий физик, создатель теории относительности и один из создателей квантовой теории и статистической физики. Родился Эйнштейн 14 марта 1879 г. в Ульме в семье совладельца электромеханического предприятия. В гимназии увлекся философией, математикой и популярной литературой по астрономии.

Закончил Цюрихский политехнический институт (1900), в 1902—1909 гг. — эксперт в федеральном патентном бюро в Берне. Здесь Эйнштейн опубликовал свои первые научные работы, одна из которых — «Новое определение размеров молекул» (1905) была защищена им в Цюрихском университете как докторская диссертация. В те же годы Эйнштейн разрабатывает и доказывает общие положения теории относительности, положившей конец т. н. «ньютоновской физики», выполняет исследования по статистической физике, броуновскому движению, теории излучения и др. Эти работы принесли ученому широкую известность: в 1909 г. он стал профессором Цюрихского университета, в 1911—1912 гг. — Немецкого университета в Праге. В 1912 г. Эйнштейн возвращается в Цюрих и занимает кафедру в Цюрихском политехникуме. На следующий год избирается членом Прусской и Баварской Академии наук и в 1914 переезжает в Берлин, где до 1933 г. является одновременно директором физического института и профессором Берлинского университета. В этот период он завершает создание общей теории относительности и развивает квантовую теорию излучения. В 1921 г. за открытие законов фотоэффекта и работы в области теоретической физики ему присуждается Нобелевская премия по физике и фотохимии.
С приходом к власти в Германии нацистов, Эйнштейн в знак протеста против фашизма в 1933 г. отказывается от германского подданства, выходит из состава академии и эмигрирует в США, где становится членом Принстонского института высших исследований. В этот период он пытался разработать единую теорию поля, занимался вопросами космологии. В 1940 г. Эйнштейн подписал письмо к президенту США, в котором указал на опасность появления ядерного оружия в фашистской Германии, что стимулировало организацию ядерных исследований в США, во главе которых встал сам ученый. После окончания Второй мировой войны, Эйнштейн выступает активным сторонником запрещения ядерного оружия и подписывает воззвание Б. Рассела.
Научные труды Эйнштейна сыграли большую роль в развитии современной физики, явившись основой квантовой электродинамики, квантовой теории поля, атомной и ядерной физики, физики элементарных частиц и других разделов физики и астрофизики. Умер 18 апреля 1955 г. в Принстоне.
