I have been a fan since I first bought "Wishmaster", my first album by the Finnish metal band. I was completely blown away by the combination of Tarja's operatic voice with power metal. I was addicted right away. That was three years ago, almost four I think. I finally got the opportunity to see the band perform live in late August. One of the highlights for me was their cover of Gary Moore's "Over the Hills and Far Away". The song was very catchy yet aggressive. Tarja sounded absolutely amazing during the song. Unfortunately the album with that song is only available as an importmore…. After doing some comparison shopping, I finally bought the cd "Over the Hills and Far Away". Now I can listen to the song as often as I want to. The other previously unreleased songs "10th Man Down" and "Away" were awesome. Like any of the band's ballads, "Away" simply took my breathe away. The production on these previously unreleased tracks is very in your face and has a big sound. I also enjoyed listening to the live tracks. It brought back memories of when I saw my favorite metal band in concert. I really dug the 2001 remake of "Astral Romance" from the band's first album. I thought this remake was vastly superior. I dug the heavy version of "Sleepwalker" too. I swear Nightwish is getting better and better with every album they put out. I can hear the sheer heaviness that I hear on their new album "Once" on "Over the Hills and Far Away". For diehard Nightwish fans, this is an album worth owning. Tracks such as Cover me, Wanderlust, and the beautiful Two for Tragedy, will stay with you , but the piece de resistance, has to be the moving and very haunting, Dead Boys Poem. Now, classed as one of my favourite pieces, ever. Wonderful, Cd, now i have acquired Oceanborn, which i feel is almost as good, as wishmaster, but not quite. Of course it does, don't be stupid! One of the best bands doing the rounds, they've finally become the bad they always threatened to with their power metal / operatic / gothic rock hybrid.And "The Siren" is a very good Nightwish song, more strident than a lot of their fare, with some Maiden-esque time changes and martial beat. You get the edited version, the album version and a live version which beefs up the guitars even more and makes me yearn for a proper orchestral live album.Then it's the fun live cover you've all been waitingmore… for - Nightwish do Megadeth. Yes, it's "Symphony of Destruction" time. And by Odin they're good at it. After the last Megadeth live debacle it's nice to remember that Dave Mustaine actually used to write good songs, which he then ruined with his whiny voice. In fact, I'm not sure I can listen to the original again. The only thing that might have made it better is hearing Tarja rather than Marco singing it.Rounding things off with another live track, "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" (me neither), complete with solo cello and Tarja at her best, this rounds off a fabulous EP which, again, highlights just how good Nightwish are.
